Christian Festivals

Christianity is the world’s biggest religion, with over two billion followers worldwide. Christianity started out in Palestine is based on the teaching and life of Jesus Christ, who was born on the Holy Land about two thousand years ago. The Christian churches revered him as the Son of God and incarnation of God.

The most important Christian festivals are: Easter, St. Patrick's Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas.

Christmas has a universal appeal. Every year it is celebrated on the 25th December, to commemorate the birthday of Jesus Christ. People deck up the Christmas tree with lights, baubles, star, gifts and streamers. Christmas carols are sung on the Christmas Eve, stockings are hung on the mantle, flowers wreath at the doorsteps and people masquerade as Santa Claus to distribute gifts, candies and toys. Reunions, family get-togethers and parties mark Christmas world over. Christmas celebrations take place around the world and are equally looked forward to.

Easter is a springtime festival that marks the resurrection of Jesus. The word Easter is named after Eastre, the Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring. Today on Easter Sunday, children wake up to find hidden colored eggs all over the house and the one who finds the most eggs wins a prize.

Christians celebrate Thanksgiving Day to offer thanks, family gathering and enjoy a king size family meal on the dinner table. The Thanksgiving food consists of Turkey, pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes and wine.

St. Patrick is an annual feast to celebrate the birth of St. Patrick, Saint of Ireland. On this day, Christians are all dressed up in green, drink pint of green bear, attend annual parades and eat Irish food.

On the Halloween Day, kids and adults all get dressed in the costume of Vampires and Dracula. It’s time for some spooky fun. Christians enjoy the day partaking in Halloween activities including trick-or-treat, bonfires, costume parties, visiting haunted attractions, carving jack-o'-lanterns on the pumpkin, watching horror movies and reading scary stories.

Christian festivals are marked by general outpouring of devotion, celebration and joy. These occasions are celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm; the people observe the time worn customs and traditions associated with each festival, which makes each of these festivals, a unique experience.

Come let's join in these festive celebrations and blend into the rich Diaspora of joy and culture.
